  • Alibi

I speak to the students about their day; their vacation or whatever to warm up.  Then I get serious and tell the students I’m a bit upset because last night the police called me telling me that they saw x number of my students outside this ice cream shop in our neighborhood (I ask them if they know it, and they all scratch their heads trying to find it)…I picked a crime..that someone stole the giant ice cream cone.  I choose half the class to be suspects and I give them a copy of their description attached below.  They are to go out into the hallway and choose an alibi from the list and then prepare all of the details regarding their story together.  Meanwhile the rest of the class receives the role of detective and they write down questions to ask the suspects.  Teacher can go between the two groups to help them out, give hints.  Once both groups finish, the suspects meet one on one with a detective who interrogates them quietly so that other suspects can’t hear.  When the questioning is done, the teacher asks for each question and answer, one by one, writes them on the board, and puts a check if all answers are the same (thus the suspects are telling the truth) and an X if the stories are different (thus, someone is lying.)  In the end we decide what the true story is, and usually the punishment in our story is to return the ice cream cone and maybe buy us all ice cream, jokingly! You, of course, can choose your own silly crime.

ATTENTION!!! LAST NIGHT AROUND 11:32PM SOMEONE STOLE THE GIANT ICE CREAM CONE OUTSIDE SCOOPS CREAMERY. IFYOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION, PLEASE CONTACT THE POLICE TIPS LINE  555-321-9111

    YOU ARE:  A SUSPECT

You have an alibi, a reason that proves your innocence.  Choose your alibi:

    a)       you were at the movies down the street for a 10pm showing of some movie.

    b)       you were at a concert at a café nearby

    c)       you were at a restaurant

You and the other suspects must agree on a story to tell the detectives, using this alibi, to prove your innocence.  You must agree on ALL of the details.  The detectives will separate you, so you must make sure to tell the EXACT SAME STORY.   YOUR FREEDOM DEPENDS ON IT!!!!!

    YOU ARE:     A DETECTIVE

You and the other detectives must compile a list of questions to ask the suspects.  The suspects will be separated, so that you see whether their stories match and thus, telling the truth, or whether they are different, which means they are lying.  ASK GOOD QUESTIONS!! IN THE NAME OF JUSTICE!!!!!

The Detectives will note down the suspects’ answers.  At the end of the interrogation, the detectives will compare their stories.
